First Jnanpith Award Winners from Different Languages

The Jnanpith Award is conferred by Bharatiya Jnanpith, a literary and research organization founded in 1944 by Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain and his wife Rama Jain. The award was instituted in 1961 but first awarded in 1965. The award consists of a citation plaque, a cash prize and a bronze replica of Saraswati. The award is open only for Indian citizens.


First Person and First Woman Winner

  1. The First Person to be conferred the Jnanpith Award was G. Sankara Kurup. He was a noted Malayalam writer and he was awarded in 1965. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1963 and was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1967.
  2. The First woman to be awarded the Jnanpith Award was Bengali writer Smt. Ashapurna Devi who was awarded in 1976. Besides the Jnanpith, she was also awarded the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 1994.
