The name of the city, Mumbai is derived from patron deity the Mother Goddess Mumba Devi, worshipped by the Kolis, the earliest inhabitants Chennai is named in honour of Chennappa Nayak, father of Venkatapathy Nayak, who controlled the entire coastal country from Pulicat in the north to the Portuguese settlement of Santhome. The name Kochi is a combination of two terms, Koch & Azhi meaning small river-mouth. Kalaburagi in Kannada means stony land. Mhow got its name from the Mahua tree which grows in abundance in the area (Source: Official website of Mhow Cantonment). The town was renamed Dr. Ambedkar Nagar as a tribute to the leader who was born here. Sakchi was renamed in honour of Shri Jamshedji Tata who founded the city.
