Desert: Definition and Types

Desert: A place which receives less than 25 cm of rain in an year is classified as a desert. Deserts may be of different types.

  • Polar regions receive very less rainfall due to low temperatures and hence such regions are known as Polar Deserts.
  • Sub-tropical Deserts are formed due to circulation patterns of air masses which causes low rainfall in certain areas.
  • Rain shadow deserts are formed on areas beyond the mountains in the path of clouds i.e. in the shadow of the mountains.
  • In the Interior deserts, moist air fails to reach them and they receive very less rainfall.
