The first man to receive a genetically modified pig kidney transplant died on 11 May 2024, two months after the operation. Richard Slayman, 62, underwent the surgery in March 2024.
The operation was carried out at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Boston (USA). The kidney from the pig had undergone 69 genome edits to make it suitable for use in humans.
